Ingredients

For the Brownie Layer:

1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter

1 cup granulated sugar

2 large eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

1/2 cup all-purpose flour

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 cup chocolate chips (optional)

For the Cookie Layer:

1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened

1/2 cup brown sugar, packed

1/4 cup granulated sugar

1 large egg

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 cup chocolate chips (or chopped nuts, optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x9 inch baking pan and line it with parchment paper for easy removal.

    Make the Brownie Layer:

      - In a medium saucepan, melt the 1/2 cup of butter over low heat. Remove from heat and stir in the sugar, eggs, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla.

        - Beat in the cocoa, flour, salt, and baking powder until well combined. If desired, fold in chocolate chips for extra fudginess.

          - Pour the brownie batter into the prepared baking pan, spreading it evenly.

            Make the Cookie Layer:

              - In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.

                - Beat in the egg and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract.

                  - In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet mixture, stirring until just combined. Fold in the chocolate chips (or nuts if using).

                    - Drop spoonfuls of cookie dough over the brownie layer. Use a spatula to gently spread it out, but don’t worry if it doesn’t cover the entire surface.

                      Bake:

                        - Bake in the preheated oven for about 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with moist crumbs (not wet batter). The edges should look set, but the center may still look a bit underbaked – that's okay!

                          Cool and Serve:

                            - Let the brookies cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before lifting them out using the parchment paper. Allow them to cool completely on a wire rack before cutting into squares.

Enjoy your delicious, fudgy chewy browkies—perfectly combining the richness of brownies and the comfort of cookies!
