Ingredients

4 cups all-purpose flour

1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast

1 ½ cups warm water (110°F/43°C)

2 tablespoons granulated sugar

2 teaspoons salt

3 tablespoons olive oil (plus extra for brushing)

6 cloves garlic, minced

½ cup unsalted butter, melted

2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped

1 teaspoon Italian seasoning

½ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)

Grated Parmesan cheese (for serving)

Instructions

Activate the Yeast: In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it's foamy.

Prepare the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Create a well in the center and add the yeast mixture and 3 tablespoons of olive oil. Mix until it forms a dough.

Knead the Dough: Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes, or until it's smooth and elastic.

First Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

Shape the Knots: Once risen, punch down the dough to release air. Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long rope (about 8-10 inches), then tie it into a knot; tuck the end underneath the knot.

Second Rise: Place the knots on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Cover and let them rise for another 30 minutes.

Preheat the Oven: While the knots are rising, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Prepare the Garlic Butter: In a small saucepan over low heat, melt the butter. Add minced garlic, parsley, Italian seasoning, and crushed red pepper flakes. Stir for about 1-2 minutes until fragrant; remove from heat.

Egg Wash (Optional): For a shiny finish, brush the tops of the knots with an egg wash (1 egg beaten with 1 tablespoon water).

Bake: Bake the knots in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown.

Brush with Garlic Butter: Once baked, immediately brush the garlic butter mixture over the hot knots. Allow excess butter to soak in.

Serve: Sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese if desired and serve warm!
